A Quick 133 Yards for Huskies’ Star : Pacific 10: Kaufman opens with two long runs and helps No. 2 Washington beat Arizona State, 31-7.

Washington tailback Napoleon Kaufman gained 133 yards in his first two carries Saturday night, scoring one touchdown and setting up another as the No. 2 Huskies opened the season with a 31-7 victory over quarterback-poor Arizona State.

The victory extended Washington’s winning streak to 15 games.

It also gave the Huskies 10 consecutive victories over Pacific 10 opponents, 11 in a row on the road and three straight over Arizona State.

Kaufman, a sophomore who gained 59 yards against the Sun Devils last season, had only four other carries, finishing with 159 yards. He also returned a kickoff 25 yards and averaged 22 yards on three punt returns.

Mario Bates, another sophomore, put up big numbers for the Sun Devils. An 80-yard burst up the middle on the first play of the second half was Arizona State’s only score. He finished with 214 yards in 19 carries.

Washington’s touchdowns came on runs of eight yards by Jay Barry, 63 by Kaufman and 10 by Darius Turner, and Billy Joe Hobert’s 10-yard pass to Eric Bjornson. Travis Hanson added a 42-yard field goal.

The Sun Devils started fourth-string quarterback Troy Rauer, a redshirt freshmen who was recalled from the defensive unit after two quarterbacks were was suspended and another quit the team. Rauer completed eight of 17 passes for 69 yards with two interceptions.

Hobert, the Rose Bowl MVP last season, threw four straight passes after the opening kickoff, then ran 21 yards on a keeper to put Washington into position for Barry’s score.

Kaufman got his first carry in the final minute of the first quarter, popping through the middle and veering toward the right sideline for a 63-yard touchdown. In the second quarter, Kaufman broke loose for 70 yards before being stopped at the Arizona State 10.
