Fewer than 24 hours after leading the Indianapolis Colts to their first opening-game victory in nine years Sunday, quarterback Mark Herrmann was released.

“The Indianapolis Colts are appreciative of the leadership Mark Herrmann provided against Cleveland, and for his many years of work with the club,” General Manager Jim Irsay said.

Herrmann, who started his 11th NFL season, was released to make room on the roster for quarterback Jack Trudeau, who had a two-game exemption after holding out until Aug. 28 and had to be activated Monday.

Herrmann completed 15 of 24 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown Sunday in the Colts’ 14-3 victory against the Cleveland Browns.

Stan Humphries will replace Bob Gagliano as the San Diego Chargers’ starting quarterback Sunday when they play at Denver.

While Bobby Ross said Gagliano did not play poorly, the Charger coach added: “I told Stan that I felt like he was a hell of a quarterback and that I thought he had some real good abilities and that we’re going to give him the job and stick with it.”

Sunday against Kansas City, Gagliano was sacked five times for 50 yards and completed seven of 20 passes for 55 yards with two interceptions.

Humphries replaced Gagliano late in the third quarter and led the Chargers to their only touchdown.
