An alleged gang member accused of attempting to murder a firefighter during the early hours of the Los Angeles riots was arraigned Tuesday on 12 more riot-related felonies, including three additional counts of attempted murder.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Susan Speer said there does not appear to be any clear motive behind the attacks in which 22-year-old Thurman Ivory Woods is charged.

“He was just shooting,” she said. “I guess he had nothing better to do. When (police) asked him why he did it, he said: ‘Because I wanted to.’ ”

Prosecutors said the three new attempted-murder charges against Woods stem from shootings at two service stations. In addition to those counts, Woods is also charged with arson, possession of an incendiary device and burglary in connection with a fire that destroyed a camera shop, and an attempt to cash a money order stolen during the riots.

Last month, Woods was charged with trying to shoot Los Angeles Firefighter Scott Miller to death as Miller drove his firetruck to a riot call the night of April 29. Police say the bullet fired by Woods struck Miller in the head, triggering a stroke that has left the 33-year-old firefighter partially paralyzed.

Woods also faces other counts in connection with the attack on Miller--assault with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Speer said Tuesday that about 45 minutes before the attack on Miller, Woods shot at an attendant at a Chevron station on Western Avenue, 10 blocks from where Miller was shot. The attendant was not hit.

Single counts of attempted murder, assault with a firearm and shooting into an occupied building were filed Tuesday in connection with that incident.

Speer said that a few minutes after the first service station attack, Woods fired at two attendants at another Chevron station a few blocks away on Adams Boulevard. Once again, neither attendant was wounded.

Two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a firearm and one count of shooting into an occupied building were filed in connection with the Adams Boulevard attack.

The night after the three shooting attacks, Woods burglarized and then torched a camera store on Beverly Boulevard, Speer said. He faces three charges in connection with that incident.
