Council Sets Workshop to Discuss City Cutbacks
Expecting Sacramento to trim as much as $745,000 from city property tax revenues in the next year, the City Council on Tuesday scheduled a planning workshop on how to cover the shortfall.
City Manager Jesse H. Duff told the council Tuesday that the Redevelopment Agency may lose nearly $700,000 for the 1992-93 fiscal year, and the city’s general fund will lose about $45,000. The city may be required to lend the Redevelopment Agency funds to meet any shortfall in spending already planned.
Duff said legislators’ unwillingness to raise taxes at the state level could force the city to raise local property taxes to meet the resulting deficit.
Duarte, he said, is one of only a handful of California cities in which the Redevelopment Agency’s financial obligations exceed the revenue generated from property tax assessments.
City staff is consulting with state agencies to determine exact budget figures. The council set the planning workshop at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 22, before its next scheduled meeting.
