A man who resembles a country music star has held up his 25th bank in the last six months, making him one of the most prolific bank robbers in Orange County history, FBI officials said Wednesday.

The robber, dubbed the “Marty Robbins Bandit,” has never shown a weapon, and no one has been harmed in his string of holdups.

“As far as serial bank robbers, he’d probably rank in the top five,’ FBI Agent Gary Morley said. “Others have robbed more banks, but he has robbed a considerable amount of banks in a short time.”

The bandit, who is said to resemble the late singer, is believed to have begun his spree at a Sanwa Bank in Westminster on March 23.

Since then, authorities believe that he is responsible for robbing banks in Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Laguna Hills, Newport Beach and Seal Beach as well as banks in Long Beach and Encinitas, in San Diego County.

The latest robbery being attributed to the bandit took place on Tuesday at a Wells Fargo Bank at 6952 Bolsa Ave. in Huntington Beach.

Police said a man fitting the bandit’s description walked into the bank at 11:35 a.m. and placed a note in front of a teller that read, “This is a robbery. I am armed.” The teller gave the man $1,280 and the robber left the bank on foot, Huntington Beach Sgt. Valdon Burkett said.

The man is described as a white male with a thin build, 35 to 40 years old and about 5 feet, 10 inches tall. He has short, dark-blond hair, wears prescription glasses and wore a gray sports coat during this week’s robbery, police said.

“He looks like an average customer,” Morley said. “When he walks into a bank, he doesn’t raise any red flags. He doesn’t really stand out like other bank robbers who may have a less than presentable appearance, may be wearing sunglasses, a baseball hat or a fake beard. He doesn’t stand out and looks somewhat businesslike.”

Tuesday’s incident is the seventh bank robbery in Huntington Beach attributed to the bandit within the last six months, Morley said.

Morley said that although the man has usually indicated to tellers during the robberies that he is carrying a gun, no one has ever reported seeing him display a weapon.

The bandit is not a suspect in a second bank robbery that took place in Seal Beach on Tuesday, only three hours after the Huntington Beach incident.

A man reportedly threatened a teller at Security Pacific Bank, 12171 Seal Beach Blvd., and was given an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing from the bank.

He is described as a white male with blond hair, about 40 years old, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 140 pounds and wearing blue jeans and a blue denim shirt, police said.

Anyone with information on the bandit is asked to contact the FBI’s Santa Ana office at (714) 542-8825.
