PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : Simms Regains His Starting Job

Phil Simms has regained his job as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback, and Jeff Hostetler isn’t too happy about it.

Simms completed 20 of 37 passes for 223 yards in last Sunday’s 31-14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but he started only because Hostetler wasn’t completely over injuries suffered during the exhibition season.

Hostetler beat out Simms at the start of last season and Coach Ray Handley said from the start of training camp this season that Hostetler would be his starter.

“I want to come out and blast everything,” Hostetler said. “What good would that do? I’m frustrated. I want to play. I feel I can play and help.”

The Chicago Bears will activate 315-pound defensive tackle William Perry for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, Coach Mike Ditka said.

Perry, who signed a two-year contract last week, will alternate at left and right defensive tackle with Chris Zorich and Steve McMichael, but will not start, Ditka said.

The Pittsburgh Steelers placed tight ends Eric Green and rookie Russ Campbell on injured reserve.

Green, who had 41 receptions for 582 yards and six touchdowns last season, has a bruised rotator cuff in his right shoulder, sustained on the first play last Sunday’s 29-24 victory in Houston.

Campbell has a broken hand.
