Reggae, World Beat Head for Menu at Warehouse

The Warehouse restaurant is launching a weekly series of reggae and world beat concerts booked by Roberto Angotti, former host of KROQ’s “Reggae Revolution” program.

Jamaican reggae acts Donovan, Foundation and Bully Cat will open the series on Monday. Donovan and Foundation, who record for the Island/Mango label, play a tradition-oriented, roots-reggae style; Bully Cat follows the more trendy “dance hall” approach, Angotti said. The Sane Band, a group of Kingston studio musicians, will provide instrumental backup.

Other bookings are Inka Inka, a reggae/world beat band from San Francisco that has opened for the Grateful Dead, on Sept. 21; and former English Beat/General Public singer Dave Wakeling and the Free Radicals, Sept. 28. Tickets are $10 for the Donovan and Wakeling concerts and $5 for Inka Inka.

“We want to become a showcase for local talent as well as national and international touring bands,” Angotti said, adding that he hopes to expand offerings at the 300-capacity Warehouse from the single weekly reggae night to two or three concerts a week by original pop and rock acts. The Warehouse, at 3450 Via Oporto, will continue to offer cover bands on weekends, Angotti said.
