Arthur Ashe, former tennis champion, was in good condition at a hospital here Friday after suffering a heart attack Thursday.

Ashe, 49, told The Washington Post that he feels fine, but would stay in the Cornell Medical Center for about a week. Ashe was arrested Wednesday, along with 95 others, in a demonstration in front of the White House while protesting the Bush administration’s policy on Haitian refugees. It was not known whether the stress of the demonstration and ensuing arrest contributed to the heart attack.

Ashe, winner of the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, revealed last spring that he had contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion during a heart bypass operation in 1983. He had an earlier bypass in 1979.
