School Board Member Responds
I was disturbed by the tone of your recent article about Westside parents seeking to enroll their children outside the Los Angeles Unified School District (Times, Aug. 23).
Without discussing any specifics or documenting the actual conditions in any schools, the article simply took at face value that Los Angeles schools are of lesser quality than those in other districts.
Rather than encourage families to pursue the untested notion that “the grass is always greener on the other side,” I would hope you would devote more coverage to the positive and exciting programs being offered in Los Angeles public schools. In the end, the real conditions of individual schools are of more value to concerned parents than broad and unsubstantiated generalizations about an entire school system.
