A Secret Service canine here to guard President Bush during his two-day visit to San Diego on Sunday and Monday is in the doghouse. He let someone steal a van he was in without so much as a bark.

The Dodge Caravan, rented by the Secret Service specifically for the President’s visit, was parked outside the U.S. Grant Hotel about 11 a.m. Sunday when someone climbed in and drove off after letting the dog out to wander Horton Plaza, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

A security guard who was unaware of the theft ran into an agent walking the dog Monday and asked, “Is it a good dog?”

“No, he’s a bad dog,” the agent replied. “Our van got stolen at the U.S. Grant and the dog ran away rather than trying to stop the thief.”

Police had no clues and no suspects, Robinson said.
