SAN DIEGO : Bail Is Tripled for Rape Suspect
A Municipal Court judge raised the bail for the alleged “Room-for-Rent” rapist Monday to $3 million after hearing several women testify that a San Carlos bill collector sexually assaulted them.
One woman testified in court Monday that Kurt Russell Newman entered her apartment through an unlocked door and attacked her in her bathroom.
Several other alleged victims--all of whom have left the state since they were victimized as long as four years ago--identified Newman in court as the man who assaulted them.
Noting the credibility of the witnesses, Judge Frank Brown tripled bail on the third day of a preliminary hearing for the 33-year-old suspect, who is accused of committing 45 crimes including rape, kidnaping and burglary.
Several women have said they were attacked after Newman entered their apartments after inquiring about a room for rent.
