Freeway Crash Sparks Fire, Shuts Lanes

Share

A two-car collision along the Santa Ana Freeway sparked a grass fire that forced traffic to back up nearly 15 miles Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol reported.

There were no injuries in the 3:20 p.m. accident, according to the CHP and Buena Park Fire Department. The collision, along the southbound lanes near the Beach Boulevard exit, forced one car into the grassy center divider, where sparks apparently ignited the fire, CHP Officer Bill Wedderburn said.

The CHP closed two lanes for about an hour because of the fire, and traffic eventually backed up to the San Gabriel River Freeway, the CHP said.

The fire burned a swath of grass roughly 50 feet wide, a Fire Department dispatcher said.

The names of those involved in the collision were not available.
