D.A. Lets Seven Prosecutors Go

The San Diego city attorney’s office laid off seven prosecutors this week.

The attorneys, all with two years’ seniority or less in the criminal division, have been given termination notices, effective in either 30 or 60 days, Senior Chief Deputy City Atty. Susan M. Heath said Thursday.

“We always evaluate the performance of people in this office on a continuing basis to see if staying is in their best career interests,” Assistant City Atty. John Kaheny said.

Although the city is facing a budget shortfall of as much as $20 million, Kaheny said the layoffs are the result of routine personnel decisions.

“This is not primarily driven by the current or the expected budget cuts that are coming,” he said. ‘We are, for a variety of reasons, in the position of developing a highly efficient and competent staff.”

The seven positions being cut will bring the number of prosecutors in the city attorney’s office to 54, Heath said. The department also includes civil litigation and civil advisory units.
