ARTESIA : Diesel Fuel Spills as 2 Freight Engines Derail
About 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled Monday when two freight train engines derailed in Artesia, but the locomotives remained upright and there were no injuries, officials said.
The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near Pioneer Boulevard and South Street, said county Fire Inspector Clark Pearson. Fire crews built a berm around the spilled fuel and waited for Southern Pacific crews to “come and pick it up,” Pearson said.
Born said the derailment occurred as railroaders were switching rail cars between trains. It was not immediately known how fast the engines were traveling, but Born said “if they were switching it couldn’t have been very fast.”
