Tropical Storm Ted Kills 5 in Philippines

MANILA — Tropical Storm Ted, packing winds up to 68 m.p.h. ripped across the Philippines on Monday, killing five people, smashing houses and triggering floods, landslides and volcanic mudflows.
The storm’s winds hurled ash from Mt. Pinatubo volcano all the way to Manila 60 miles to the south and pelted the former U.S. Clark Air Base in Angeles City with a “rain of mud” that turned day into night, residents said.
