‘No Contest’ in Ninth Race at Fairplex
The ninth race Monday at Fairplex Park was declared “no contest” because of extensive interference to the remaining horses in the field after a two-horse spill on the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile event.
The problem occurred when Halo’s Bring Roses and Junior Bill lost their riders on the first turn. None of the horses or riders appeared seriously hurt, but upon regaining his feet, Halo’s Bring Roses turned around and ran toward the other horses, who were rounding the clubhouse turn.
Riders on the other eight entrants had to steer their mounts away from the oncoming loose horse, eliminating a couple of runners from contention.
The remainder of the field managed to pass the loose horse. Favored Icy Cuddle eventually edged second-choice Cold N’ Cool for an apparent win. However, the stewards ruled that under CHRB regulations concerning extensive interference of the entire field during the race, the event was declared no contest.
All win, place, show and exacta wagers on the ninth race were refunded. All numbers in the race were treated as successful for both the late triple and Pick Six.
