A federal indictment has been filed charging three people with conspiracy to sell marijuana, U.S. Atty. William Braniff announced Tuesday.

Jens Schneider, 27, of Orlando, Fla., and Scott Lambert Chandler and Alan Flahive, both 27 years old and from Carlsbad, were charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday, according to Assistant U.S. Atty. Gonzalo P. Curiel. If convicted of all charges, each could face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

According to allegations in the indictment and court papers, Chandler, Flahive and Schneider were involved in a conspiracy to distribute more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana in Florida and elsewhere from late 1988 through May 12, 1992.

The three were arrested in Encinitas on May 12 after agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Customs Service and the Internal Revenue Service conducted an investigation.

Lambert and Flahive were being held in lieu of $200,000 bail each. Schneider was being held without bail.
