LOS ANGELES : Galanter Fights Limited Plan to Fill Airport Post

Share

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter launched a challenge Tuesday to the Airport Commission’s plan to begin its search for a new general manager from within the city’s work force.

Insisting that the highly coveted post demands an exhaustive quest, Galanter asked the council to prevail on the commission to launch a worldwide search for a successor to Clifton A. Moore, the department’s longtime manager who recently announced plans to retire early next year. Galanter’s request will come before the council for debate next Wednesday.

Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky echoed Galanter’s remarks and added that the commission’s action implies that they already have “somebody in mind” as Moore’s successor. But commission President Robert Chick denied that the commission is beginning its search among city employees because it knows who it wants to appoint. Rather, Chick said, the commission was using a cost-effective approach to finding a new general manager. He said it will broaden its search if it cannot find a qualified successor among city workers.
