Kevin Stevens scored two goals and Mario Lemieux, playing despite a groin injury, added another on a unassisted shorthanded score in the second period as Pittsburgh opened a 3-1 lead.
Hiller scored goals in each of the first two periods before Jari Kurri scored at 2:59 of the third period to tie it.
