VENTURA : Plan for Cultural Development OKd

The Ventura City Council on Monday adopted a plan that will serve as a guide for the city’s development of cultural programs and services.

The Community Culture Plan, which was drafted by 26 artists and business leaders, calls for more facilities and more money for cultural activities.

The plan recommends designating downtown Ventura as a cultural district, with the hope that cultural events will boost the city’s plans for revitalizing downtown.

About 20 people showed up at the council meeting Monday night to hear discussion on the issue.

Cindy Zimmerman, executive director of the Ventura Arts Council, said, “We think the city is in the best position to bring a coordinated view.”

Opponents of the plan, however, contend that adoption of the project means that art will be politicized.

Wyndra Roche, who owns an art gallery in downtown Ventura, said, “Artists are the first to be dominated in an oppressive society. This is a cultural welfare plan.”

She said that only mediocre, politicized artists would thrive under the plan.

Other recommendations in the plan include building performing arts centers in Ventura, establishing an annual arts festival and promoting historical and cultural landmarks.
