From Staff and Wire Reports

Lisa Fernandez, a three-time All-American at UCLA, was named winner of the Honda Award as the nation’s best collegiate softball player for the second consecutive season.

Last season Fernandez led the Bruins to their fourth NCAA title in five years. She finished with a 29-0 record, a 65-inning scoreless streak and a 0.14 earned-run average and batted .401.

It is the fifth consecutive year a Bruin has won the honor in softball. Fernandez joins another UCLA star, Natalie Williams, who won in volleyball, among those eligible for the Honda-Broderick Cup that goes to the nation’s outstanding female athlete. That will be announced in January during the NCAA convention in Dallas.
