Anaheim came into Thursday night’s game looking for a little more respect and a fourth consecutive victory. The Colonists got neither from Cypress.

After breezing through three games without giving up so much as a touchdown, Anaheim met its match. The Centurions ended that streak with a 21-13 victory at Western High School.

“Our kids don’t know how to take success yet,” Anaheim Coach Todd Borowski said. “This was a great learning experience for them.”

It was taught by a team that wasn’t exactly skilled in that art either.

Cypress (1-2) bumbled and fumbled its way through a good part of the game. But in the end, the Centurions’ defense and special teams made enough big plays.

Twice in the first half, the Centurions gave Anaheim great field position, but it cost them only three points.

First, defensive back Javiar Gomez intercepted a David Martin pass and returned it to the eight-yard line. But three plays lost 11 yards and Anaheim had to settle for a Julio Herrera field goal.

Then Justin Beltran recovered a Martin fumble at the Cypress 37. But Anaheim failed to get a first down and Herrera’s 47-yard attempt was wide.

“I’ve been at Cypress a long time and this is the first time I can remember us making mistakes and then coming back,” Coach John Selbe said.

Still, Anaheim led, 10-7, at halftime.

The Centurions took the lead midway through the third quarter. Martin Guillory fielded a punt on the five and went up the left sidelines for a 95-yard return.

Anaheim (3-1), which was off to its best start in nearly two decades, gained only 153 total yards.
