The same holes that helped Jim Colbert regain control of the tournament took Lee Trevino out of it--and possibly out for the season Friday at the Vantage Championships at Clemons, N.C.

Colbert, the defending tournament champion, had an eagle and birdie on the sixth and seventh holes.

“Two-two, that really got me back in the tournament,” Colbert said after he shot a seven-under-par 65 to take a two-shot first-round lead in the $1.35-million event, the richest on the Senior PGA Tour.

Trevino, playing in the same pairing with Colbert, was forced out of the tournament when a nagging thumb injury flared on the sixth and seventh holes.

“I can’t play like this,” Trevino said. “I’m going to get this fixed as soon as I can, and that looks like surgery.”

Trevino, who leads the seniors in money-winnings with $789,708, in victories with five and, at this point, is the leading candidate for Player of the Year honors, said his season might be over.

“All my ambitions are out the window,” he said. “It’s been a hell of a year, and now it’s probably over.”

Trevino said he would consult Dr. Frank Jobe at the Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood as quickly as possible.

Jim Gallagher shot a four-under-par 68 and Gary Hallberg a 69 to join Robert Friend atop the leader board after the second round of the Southern Open in Pine Mountain, Ga.

Friend, among five players who shared the opening-round lead, had a two-day score of seven-under-par 137 after a round of 70 over a Mountain View Golf Course.

John Daly, among the leading group Thursday, had a 71, his seventh consecutive below-par effort on tour. Joining him at 138 was Ed Humenik, another of Thursday’s leaders who also had a 71.

Former U.S. Open champions Laura Davies and Lisalotte Neumann helped the European team to a 2 1/2-1 1/2 lead over the United States in the opening round of the Solheim Cup women’s team golf tournament at Edinburg, Scotland.

Davies, winner of the 1987 Women’s Open, and her British teammate Alison Nicholas birdied six of the first 10 holes in the opening match and defeated Betsy King and Beth Daniel by one hole.

Two years ago, the Americans won, 11 1/2 to 4 1/2, in the first Solheim Cup at Lake Nona, Fla.
