After struggling with its ground game in two early-season losses, Golden West rolled up some bigger rushing numbers Saturday and it proved to be just enough to defeat Southwestern, 30-29, in a Mission Conference game at Golden West.

The Rustlers’ alternating tailbacks, Derrick Ragsdale and Brian Williams, rushed for 155 and 143 yards, respectively, and Golden West totaled 314 yards on the ground. In their first two games, the Rustlers managed a total of 137 yards rushing.

Golden West (1-2) led by as many as 12 points in the second half before Southwestern made three consecutive scores to take a 29-24 lead with 11 minutes 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

On their ensuing possession, the Rustlers drove 85 yards in 11 plays and scored on a one-yard run by Ragsdale with six minutes left. The key play of the drive was a 30-yard pass from John Shipp to Adrian Brown giving Golden West first and goal at the seven. Ragsdale scored on fourth and goal from the one.

Southwestern (1-3) advanced to midfield on its next possession, but the drive was stopped when Adam Bowermaster intercepted a pass with 3:55 remaining.

Southwestern got the ball back at its 19-yard line with 26 seconds left, but Frank Marvitz sacked Southwestern quarterback Jorge Munoz and caused a fumble that was recovered by the Rustlers’ Robert Griffin.
