BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Fired Announcer Conin Thanks Fans

Angel radio announcer Al Conin, who will call his final game today after nine years in the booth, issued a statement to thank fans for their support. He and broadcast partner Bob Jamison were not rehired for 1993.

“You have reaffirmed my long-held belief that a radio baseball broadcaster . . . has an unwritten trust to uphold, too, a trust to be honest and open, whether the message is good or bad,” it said in part. “The experience has been heart-warming and down-right humbling.”

Today’s game will be aired on KLIT (101.9 FM) because of a scheduling conflict with KMPC.

Hubie Brooks, hitting .216 before Saturday’s game, hasn’t increased his chances of being re-signed for next season. “I haven’t seen him on a prolonged streak where he’s really been stinging the ball,” Manager Buck Rodgers said. “I thought there’d be a period where he’d give us a 15 for 40 or something like that, but he hasn’t.”

Damion Easley is to leave today for Arizona to play in the new Arizona Fall League, but that plan might change. Rodgers said the Angels might instead assign infielder Kevin Flora to their Scottsdale team in the new league and send Easley to the Instructional League. . . . Jose Canseco, bothered by back and shoulder problems, did not play for Texas Saturday. . . . Angel left-hander Jim Abbott tied for first in fielding among AL pitchers with 45 or more total chances. Abbott and Milwaukee’s Chris Bosio each fielded 46 total chances without an error, and Ben McDonald of Baltimore fielded 47 flawlessly.
