CHESS RESULTS : Fischer, Spassky Play to Third Straight Draw

Share

Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, rivals in the most lucrative chess match ever played, agreed to their third straight draw Sunday in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The two former world champions will continue their $5-million rematch until one player wins 10 games. Fischer currently leads, 5-3, with seven draws.

Sunday’s game began with a surprise as Fischer, playing White, scrapped his favorite 1 e4 for 1 c4, a move he has used only four times in his career. A critical situation arose after Spassky chose a risky sacrifice of his bishop at move 23. Fischer missed the strongest 30th move, and the draw was agreed upon three moves later.

The 16th game is scheduled for Wednesday.
