A gunman in a car opened fire on a Santa Ana man in an alley Monday afternoon, wounding him in the stomach, police said.

Ruben Luna, 21, was in an alley behind 1801 S. Evergreen St. when an unidentified gunman shot him once, Sgt. Dick Faust said.

Luna was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana after the 3:20 p.m. shooting, Faust said. A hospital nursing supervisor said Luna was in stable condition in the intensive care unit.

Luna had been arguing with a group of men before the shooting, Faust said. Investigators, who said the shooting may be gang-related, did not know what the argument was about.

At least some members of that group then got into a car and sought out Luna, firing at him as they drove by, Faust said.

Police believe as many as three cars were reported leaving the area after the shooting. It was not clear how many may have been connected to the shooting, police said.

The cars were described as a Monte Carlo, a Chevrolet and a Suzuki Samurai, all blue.

Police had made no arrests.
