Notes on a Scorecard - Oct. 13, 1992

Share

When the Toronto Blue Jays trailed, 6-1, after six innings Monday, I thought they had the Oakland Athletics right where they wanted them. . . .

Did the Dodgers lend these guys their gloves? Thirteen errors have been committed during the last three games of the series, eight by the Blue Jays. . . .

Among those showing the most determination and getting the most results in Game 5 were Dave Stewart, 35; Rickey Henderson, 33, and Dave Winfield, 41. . . .

Every time I see Winfield hit a home run, I think about how good Andre Dawson is going to be three years from now. . . .

Oakland won the American League Championship Series in Toronto in 1989, but that series lasted only five games. . . .

Imagine how many moves Tony La Russa would be making if he were managing in a league that didn’t have the designated hitter. . . .

If Barry Bonds can extend his hitting streak to two games today, Pittsburgh will have a chance to force a Game 7 with the Braves in Atlanta. . . .

It is hard to sympathize with stars such as Bonds and Doug Drabek, who may be pressing because of impending free agency. What about the old-time players who knew somebody in the minor leagues was waiting to take their jobs if they had a bad week? . . .

Deion Sanders could have stood in bed Sunday and the Falcons and Braves still would have lost. . . .

Four of the last five playoff games have failed to sell out. . . .

The Braves could become the closest thing to a dynasty in baseball. Their farm system has been named the best by the Sporting News. . . .

The Detroit Tigers had so much success with football’s Bo Schembechler as president that they hired former NHL president John Ziegler as an adviser. . . .

Tom Coughlin, the Boston College coach and former New York Giant assistant, may replace the Giants’ Ray Handley at the end of the season. . . .

Buffalo wide receiver James Lofton, 36, showed no signs of having slowed down when he caught five passes for 72 yards against the Raiders. . . .

Among early AFC rookie-of-the-year candidates is Dale Carter, the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive back-kick returner from Tennessee. . . .

In case you didn’t notice, Northwestern got knocked out of a share of the Big Ten lead Saturday. . . .

It’s hard to believe that broadcaster Bob Miller has begun his 20th season with the Kings. The only difference is that he used to look old for his age and now he looks young for his age. . . .

Washington’s one-point edge over Miami in the Associated Press poll makes it the third-closest ever. USC and Texas A&M; tied for first on Nov. 27, 1939, and Minnesota and Texas tied on Oct. 27, 1941. . . .

The closest final AP poll was last season’s. Miami finished four points ahead of Washington. . . .

I’m still campaigning for one of UCLA’s true freshman quarterbacks, Ryan Fien or Scott Fitterer, to get a chance to play. The defense remains formidable, but the Bruins need to score more points to finish with a winning record and a chance at a bowl game. . . .

The cover of the Kings’ media guide shows their new coach and general manager wearing shades and standing beneath Melrose Ave. and Beverley Dr. signs. . . .

During the first week of the NHL season, nobody was thrown out of a game for being the instigator of a fight. . . .

Nearly as surprising as Tampa Bay’s victory over Chicago on opening night in Florida was the Lightning’s tie with the Blackhawks on Sunday at Chicago Stadium. . . .

UCLA, Southern Methodist, Cal State Fullerton and Davidson will play in the Pacific Soccer Classic, which has produced three NCAA champions and two runners-up in its seven years, Friday night at El Camino College and Sunday afternoon at UCLA. . . .

Host Loyola Marymount, Michigan State, Cal State Northridge and Stetson will play in the second annual Los Angeles Classic Basketball Invitational Dec. 11-12. . . .

Trainer Gary Jones is doing a terrific job with Al Michaels’ 5-year-old gelding Barraq, a former bad actor who now behaves himself and has won two consecutive grass races impressively. . . .

You ought to be able to get a decent price on A.P. Indy, who had traffic problems in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, in the Breeders’ Cup Classic Oct. 31. . . .

George Foreman will return to the ring Jan. 23 on HBO, probably against Michael Dokes. . . . John Cook, who with three victories this year at 35 has doubled his PGA Tour total, was the youngest to qualify for the Southern California amateur championship tournament when he was 14. . . .

After getting Stanley Roberts and John Williams, the Clippers should have moved training camp from La Jolla to the nearby Golden Door fitness resort.
