A man and woman whose frozen bodies were found in the walk-in freezer of a popular downtown restaurant last weekend were strangled, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Tuesday.

Police said the victims had been tentatively identified, but declined to release their names pending notification of relatives. Coroner’s office spokesman Scott Carrier said it had not been determined how long the bodies had been in the freezer or how long they had been dead.

Carrier said the bodies did not have broken bones, bullet holes or any outward sign of trauma.

The two bodies were discovered in Jack’s Placita restaurant Saturday morning by an employee cleaning the freezer. Police are investigating the case in connection with the disappearance of the restaurant’s owner, Lydia Katash, 40, and manager Eli Massalton, 31, in January.
