Two Islamic organizations in Los Angeles said Tuesday they have launched efforts to collect relief funds to help victims of the earthquake this week near Cairo.

Maher Hathout chairman of the Islamic Center of Southern California said contributions should be sent to ICSC/Egyptian Earthquake Relief Fund, 434 S. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles 90020. He said his organization has already purchased antibiotics, anti-shock medicines and antiseptics which will be sent to the Egyptian capital by air today. The organization needs cash gifts, which are tax deductible, to send further help, Hathout said.

Ruksana Mohammed, a spokeswoman for the American Network for Service and Relief, said that group is collecting money to send to the Egyptian Red Crescent, an affiliate of the Red Cross. She said contributions should be sent to ANSAR/Islamic Relief Fund for Earthquake Victims, 3010 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 217, Los Angeles 90010.
