Cal State Long Beach faced a tough situation heading into Wednesday night’s match against USC, and although the 49ers swept the Trojans, it was not an easy victory.

Third-ranked Long Beach defeated sixth-ranked USC, 15-13, 15-9, 19-17, in a nonconference match before 513 at USC.

The 49ers (14-1) were without Lauri Jones, a 6-foot-3 junior middle blocker who quit after the Notre Dame tournament last week.

Jones was fourth on the team in blocking with 30 and had played in 47 of 49 games. She did not show for practice this week. Freshman Brita Schwerm, a 5-10 outside hitter, had her first start against USC.

The 49ers were led by Nichelle Burton, who had 17 kills. Christine Romero, an outside hitter, had 10 kills, 10 digs and three blocks.

For USC (12-3), outside hitter Katie Haller had 11 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Cica Baccelli led USC with 16 kills.

Long Beach jumped to an 11-3 lead in game three, but USC tied the score, 14-14, after USC missed three chances to put the match away.

With the score tied, 17-17, the 49ers finally won on USC errors, when Kelly Kuebler hit the ball into the net and Baccelli hit one long.

“We just have to iron out a few things here and there, a few missed balls, and we’ll be ready for UCLA on Friday,” Haller said.
