PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Waymer Frustrated by Lack of Action

Share

For the first time in his career, defensive back Dave Waymer is fighting for playing time.

Waymer, who signed as a Plan B free agent from the San Francisco 49ers in April, is a 13-year veteran and third on the AFC interception list with 48.

This season, however, Waymer has been in only on special teams and short-yardage plays.

“It’s frustrating, not being able to play and contribute more,” said Waymer, who has played in 187 consecutive games since beginning his career with the New Orleans Saints in 1980. “But, I’m going to continue to work hard and be ready.”

Waymer is listed as backup safety behind Ronnie Lott and Eddie Anderson but does not play when the Raiders go into their prevent defense.

Last season, Waymer started 15 games at safety for the 49ers and led the team in tackles with 86 and intercepted four passes.

For the third consecutive game, Reggie McElroy will start at tackle in place of Steve Wright in Sunday’s game at Seattle. . . . Eric Dickerson needs 20 yards rushing to pass Tony Dorsett, who gained 12,739, and become the No. 2 rusher in NFL history behind Walter Payton, who finished his career with 16,726.
