‘LILI MARLENE’
The song “Lili Marlene” was not banned by Hitler (Marlene Dietrich,” Sept. 17). It was high on the Nazi hit parade.
Lale Andersen, who recorded the original version, was a favorite of Adolf Hitler and was awarded the Knight’s Cross. Every night at 9:57 p.m. she would sing it over Belgrade Radio for the German troops in North Africa.
The British and the Americans picked it up and composed their own version.
