Surf Tour Leader Beschen Wins in San Francisco
San Clemente’s Shane Beschen strengthened his lead in the Bud Pro Surfing tour standings Sunday with a victory at the Body Glove San Francisco Open at Ocean Beach.
Beschen beat Carlsbad’s Taylor Knox, Australia’s Jake Spooner and Hollywood’s Joey Jenkins in four- to five-foot surf. Beschen earned $4,000 for the victory and 1,000 points to increase his lead in the overall standings from 100 points to 995 over Cardiff’s Rob Machado with one event remaining.
Newport Beach’s Richie Collins, one of the top surfers on the world and U.S. tours, injured his back during the semifinals and had to be helped from the water.
Tour officials said Collins is expected to miss several weeks because of the injury, and his qualifying ranking for the world tour next season could be in danger.
Pat Caldwell and Brian Wise, both of San Clemente, finished third and fourth, respectively, in the bodyboarding division.
