NOTES : Marines Learn the Maple Leaf Goes Up
Officials scrambled to apologize to a nation Sunday when a U.S. Marine Color Guard from Atlanta inadvertently carried the Canadian flag upside down during ceremonies before Game 2.
Major League Baseball administrators immediately apologized “to the people of Canada and to all baseball fans for the unintentional and improper display of the Canadian flag during the national anthems prior to the start of tonight’s World Series game.”
However, that didn’t appear to mollify irate citizens in Canada. Bill Duff, assistant city editor of the Toronto Sun, said reaction in the Blue Jays’ home city was immediate and unhappy.
“We received 200 phone calls within a half-hour, and most of them are outraged and insulted,” Duff said.
Canadian reporters covering the World Series said they expected the incident to be reported on the front pages of newspapers throughout the country.
