Denver Broncos’ Coach Dan Reeves denied a published report that he may be headed to the Phoenix Cardinals after his contract expires at the end of the season.

“I saw that and it’s a joke,” Reeves said. “That’s strictly a rumor. There’s no basis for it. People can write anything they want.”

Quarterback Brett Favre will start for the Green Bay Packers against the Chicago Bears Sunday, but Coach Mike Holmgren wavered on whether Favre is his starter the rest of the season.

Owner James Orthwein says he has no plans to move the New England Patriots to St. Louis, despite a decision by NFL owners to postpone expansion until at least 1995. Orthwein, who heads the bid by St. Louis to receive an expansion franchise, said he bought the Patriots to stabilize the franchise and sell it to interested local people.

Everson Walls, whose 56 career interceptions ranked him second to Ronnie Lott among active players, was waived by the New York Giants. . . . Seattle placed starting left guard Andy Heck on injured reserve. Heck sprained his right ankle and twisted his right knee in Sunday’s 19-0 loss to the Raiders. The Seahawks signed free-agent guard Sean Farrell.
