PRO FOOTBALL: DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Odds in Favor of Winning Toss

Cleveland Gary is on a pace for a 1,186-yard season. Jim Everett has eclipsed his personal-best completion average twice in recent weeks. With 15 sacks, the Rams are two short of last season’s total. And they already have 12 interceptions, one more than last season.

On the flip side, however, they are really struggling.

The Rams have not won a coin toss in 1992. They are 0 for 11 in preseason and regular-season flips. According to Bill Consoli, Ram computer systems manager and a graduate of Harvey Mudd with a degree in applied mathematics, the odds of losing 11 coin tosses in a row are 2,047 to 1. The odds of losing 12 in a row are 4,095 to 1.

The visiting team gets to call heads or tails, so veteran tackle Jackie Slater will get a chance to go 0 for 7. Slater, who always chooses for heads because “it serves as a constant reminder that Jesus Christ is the head of my life,” won’t waver in the Georgia Dome. “I’ll just keep the faith,” he said.

Jacob Green, a fixture at left defensive end for 11 years with Seattle before injuring his knee five days before the season opener, was released off injured reserve.

Green was one of Coach Chuck Knox’s favorite players in Seattle. But his salary--reported to be more than $1 million a year--his age (35) and the knee injury were enough to outweigh the advantage of carrying him primarily for his impact on a young defensive line that includes rookie starters Sean Gilbert and Marc Boutte, so the Rams did not claim him.

If Green, an aggressive player with 97 1/2 sacks, passes through waivers, he figures to get a physical exam and tryout from some teams, and that might include the Rams.
