A’s La Russa Is Chosen as AL’s Best Again
Tony La Russa, who led the Oakland Athletics to their fourth American League West title in five years, on Tuesday was chosen as American League manager of the year for the third time by the Baseball Writers Assn. of America.
First-year manager Phil Garner of the Milwaukee Brewers was second.
Johnny Oates of the Baltimore Orioles finished third and Cito Gaston, who led the Toronto Blue Jays to Canada’s first World Series title, was fourth.
La Russa was given similar honors by the Sporting News, which selected Gary Sheffield of the San Diego Padres as major league player of the year.
