STANTON : Mayor Holds Lead in Contributions

Share

Mayor Sal Sapien leads all City Council candidates in contributions received, with some hefty donations from Orange County businesses, according to documents filed recently with the city clerk.

Sapien got a $1,000 contribution from Westminster Car Wash and $500 from Hunt-Wesson Foods Inc. in Fullerton. Paragon Cable in Garden Grove and Admore Auto Dismantlers in Stanton each gave Sapien $100, as did Baumans Market in Stanton and Southland Life Fleet in Santa Ana, which provides ambulance service.

Of Sapien’s $2,983 raised, only $483 was from contributions of under $100. He took out no loans.

The documents show contributions and expenditures through Oct. 17. Three candidates are running for two council seats in the at-large election. The mayor is elected from among the five council members.

Candidate William H. Horton, a 58-year-old auto dealership manager, has raised $3,312, with $1,800 coming from loans to himself. Before Oct. 1, Horton had received one contribution, of $35. Since then, he has received $1,077 in contributions of less than $100, and $400 in three larger contributions.

Horton spent only $378 in the first 17 days of October, just a third of Sapien’s $1,133 expenditure during that period.

Candidate Robert K. Hyun, a 24-year-old recent college graduate, has reported raising and spending less than $1,000.
