FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Halloween Sobriety Tests May Be Given
Halloween revelers who drive along Harbor Boulevard on Saturday night may be stopped by police and asked to take a sobriety test.
The Police Department will begin the first in a series of 12 sobriety checkpoints during the next year.
“The program is intended to educate drivers that if they drive drunk, they are likely to be stopped and arrested,” said Sgt. Larry Griswold.
Griswold said the checkpoint will be on Harbor Boulevard at the north end of the city between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Police will be working with the California Highway Patrol at the checkpoint. Griswold said it’s estimated that 1,200 motorists will pass through the checkpoint.
The Police Department received a $13,000 grant from state and federal traffic safety agencies, which made possible the purchase of a trailer, equipment and educational material for the checkpoint. Police on Saturday will be handing motorists information about seat belt safety.
Griswold said the grant money will allow the department to hold sobriety checkpoints once a month for the next year. Checkpoints will be conducted on streets where there have been a high number of drunk-driving accidents, he said.
