Oxnard Man Hit, Killed by Train
An Oxnard man was killed by a train Thursday on the east side of Oxnard Boulevard just north of 1st Street, authorities said.
The man, whose identity was not released, was in his mid-50s, Ventura County Deputy Coroner Zelmira Isaac said.
His mangled body was discovered by two children about 8:30 p.m., Oxnard police said.
Police said there were no known witnesses to the train accident. But they believe the victim may have been killed by a switching engine that had been moving boxcars in and out of the nearby rail yard between 7 and 7:45 p.m.
The man’s body was already on the tracks when a southbound Amtrak passenger train rolled through at 8:20 p.m., police said.
There have been at least three other train fatalities in Ventura County this year.
On Aug. 8, a 25-year-old serviceman from Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station was hit and killed by a freight train at Rincon Point near Bates Road and the Ventura Freeway.
The serviceman had fallen asleep on the tracks.
On Jan. 22, a Woodland Hills man killed himself by lying in the path of an Amtrak train near Lewis Road and Merritt Avenue in Camarillo.
On Jan. 13, 78-year-old Phyllis Gilbert of Camarillo died when her car apparently stalled in the path of an Amtrak train at a crossing on Las Posas Road at 5th Street.
