Water Official’s Raise Rescinded

LONG BEACH — Under pressure from city officials, the Water Commission agreed unanimously Thursday to rescind the $10,346 pay raise it had given to its retiring general manager in October.
The commissioners, who operate independently, raised J. Dan Davis’s salary to $104,346 on Oct. 1, even though executive salaries have been frozen in Long Beach since 1991 because of the recession.
Davis will retire at the end of this year, and the raise would have increased his pension $5,000 to a total of $48,000 annually. City Council members balked at the increase and asked the commissioners to reconsider.
The water commissioners said Thursday that they had misinterpreted the city’s policy. The commissioners also voted without comment to adopt the city’s hiring freeze policy.
Assistant General Manager Robert Cole will take over Davis’ position at the original $94,000 salary.
