From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A fifth suspect was arrested in connection with the baseball bat beating of three Latino migrant workers in apparent retaliation for an alleged rape, Sheriff Jim Roache said Friday. Ronald Inman, 22, of El Cajon was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, assault with great bodily injury, conspiracy to commit these crimes, and a hate crime. Inman was the fifth man arrested in the Oct. 1 attack on the migrants in Alpine. Two Mexican men and a Guatemalan man who were not involved in the alleged rape suffered serious injuries in the vigilante-style attack, sheriff’s officials have said. Authorities say that the attacks were committed in retaliation for the alleged Sept. 25 rape of a woman who told deputies she was dragged into bushes by three Latino men, including one who raped her. The district attorney’s office has declined to prosecute anyone in the alleged rape, citing conflicting accounts of what happened and evidence suggesting that the woman had consensual sex with at least one of the three men.
