By Train to Arizona and New Mexico : Winter rail packages originating in Los Angeles take in sights from Grand Canyon to Santa Fe.

Los Coyotes Travel of Buena Park, a major promoter of train travel, offers a fall schedule of Amtrak trips to Arizona and New Mexico.

Two different rail packages will leave Los Angeles by Amtrak Superliner daily, November through March.

The “Grand Canyon Winter Rail Bargain” includes round-trip, overnight Superliner coach travel to Flagstaff, Ariz.; two nights at the Little America Hotel in Flagstaff, and a narrated motor-coach tour that takes in the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, Jerome and Montezuma Castle National Monument.

The “Santa Fe Winter Rail Bargain” includes an overnight rail-coach to Lamy, N.M., with a motor-coach transfer to Santa Fe; two nights at the Inn at Loretto, just off the Santa Fe Plaza; two full breakfasts, and plenty of leisure time for shopping and walking tours of the historic Plaza area. There is no escorted sightseeing tour included.

Rates are $289 for the Grand Canyon trip, $279 for Santa Fe, per person, double occupancy. Travelers age 62 and over should check with Los Coyotes about Amtrak’s 15% discount for Monday-to-Thursday departures--a savings of about $10-$12 on the rail portion.

Combining rail travel with a holiday escape, Calico Tours is offering an escorted “Christmas California Style” tour Dec. 25-27 that features two nights and a Christmas dinner at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.

In addition to Amtrak coach rail from Los Angeles, there’s also a motor-coach tour to Carmel and an evening tour of Hearst Castle included in the $299 per person, double, rate.

A number of Thanksgiving and Christmas tour ideas are found in the monthly listings of Alhambra-based Golden Tours. This nonprofit senior organization acts as a clearinghouse for most local tour and cruise companies geared to mature travelers.

Golden Tours Membership, priced at $6 for singles or couples ($8 after Dec. 31), is required. There are 50-70 tours and trips listed each month, ranging from day excursions to longer domestic tours, cruises and a number of escorted tours to foreign destinations.
