COUNTYWIDE : Bike Safety Program Seeks Volunteers

Share

The Newport Beach Sprocket Woman Bike Safety Program is going countywide.

Organizers of the program are seeking enthusiastic women and men. But they must be willing to wear blue tights, a white-sequined cape, a bike helmet and a mask and be able to impart wisdom to kindergartners through second-graders.

Sprocket Woman is a Super Man-like figure that currently tours Newport Beach schools spreading a simple message--”Wear your bike helmet”--and teaching a few safety techniques when it comes to maneuvering bicycles.

Program founder Fran Farrer said more Sprocket Women, especially Spanish-speaking ones, are needed to take the message to children to all of Orange County.

“The little kids love Sprocket Woman,” Farrer said. “When they reach the third grade, helmet use becomes uncool, but in their minds they know that they should be wearing helmets when they ride their bikes.”

Anyone interested in applying for the job should send a letter or resume to the Sprocket Woman Program, P.O. Box 1768, Newport Beach, Calif. 92658.
