(L.A. City) Councilman Mike Hernandez, in his report on the April riots, said two cities coexist within Los Angeles: One belongs to the poor, the other to the rich people. The riots and the looting, we then deduce, were a desperate attempt to redress these economic inequalities.
In contrast to this useless and destructive public reaction, there are other options that could prove to be far better for the political and social organization of the community.
The day that the neighbors of Bell Gardens got tired of being ruled by a group of people that they felt did not represent their community, they got organized politically and won power. Recently we have seen the people of Pico Rivera, El Monte and Wilmington organizing to decide their own destiny. This is the correct strategy.
