British jockey Lester Piggott, 56, was in stable condition Sunday with injuries suffered in a spill during a Breeders’ Cup race.

The 11-time English champion suffered a broken collarbone and two ribs when his mount, Mr Brooks, went down after his right front leg broke during the Sprint on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. Mr Brooks was destroyed.

Piggott had a partially collapsed lung when he was admitted to Hollywood Memorial Hospital. He remained in intensive care Sunday.

“The doctors are tremendously impressed with his fitness and state of health, so I don’t think we have seen the last of him (as a jockey) by any means,” Susan Piggott said at her home in Newmarket, England.

Piggott will turn 57 on Thursday.
