Man Gets Year in ‘Sex Slave’ Case

A man who brought his wife’s 14-year-old sister to the Los Angeles area from Mexico and repeatedly had sex with her was sentenced Tuesday to a year in jail and five years probation on two counts of committing lewd acts with a minor.

But Augustin Ramirez, 31, was expected to be released from jail Tuesday night because he has received credit for serving 352 days in custody, a court employee said.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel also sentenced Ramirez to three years, eight months in state prison, but he will not serve that sentence unless he fails to complete his probation, the court employee said.

Ramirez gained notoriety when the victim, whose name was withheld, said he kidnaped her from her village in Puebla, a state capital southeast of Mexico City, and held her captive for more than a month as a “sex slave.”

The girl later recanted her story and said she came willingly to Los Angeles with Ramirez, who is married to the girl’s older sister and has had five children with her.
