COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DAILY REPORT : UCLA : One-Back Attack Keeps Bruins on Track

Share

After averaging 37 yards rushing in its first four conference games, UCLA switched to a one-back formation in last week’s 48-12 loss at California because fullback Kaleaph Carter had an Achilles’ tendon injury.

The one-back offense was productive, as tailback Chris Alexander gained 103 yards in 14 carries. UCLA amassed 110 yards on the ground, its best in a Pacific 10 game this season.

Coach Terry Donahue said the Bruins may use the one-back formation in Saturday’s game against Oregon State at the Rose Bowl.

Donnie Edwards, a redshirt freshman linebacker, has made a big impact since moving into the starting lineup three weeks ago. Edwards has 39 tackles, tied for third on the team, three quarterback sacks, caused three fumbles and has an interception.

UCLA ranks last or next to last in the Pac-10 in total offense, rushing offense, rushing defense, scoring offense and turnover margin. . . . The Bruins have started a different quarterback in the last four games. John Barnes started against Cal. Ryan Fien started against Arizona State. Barnes started against Washington State and Rob Walker started against Stanford. . . . Wide receiver Sean LaChapelle, who has 1,985 receiving yards, needs 39 yards to pass Flipper Anderson on UCLA’s all-time career yardage list.
