Santa Monica police arrested five transients Wednesday and questioned them about the robbery and brutal beating of ABC television news correspondent Gary Shepard, investigators said.

Police believe that the five men have committed several residential burglaries or robberies in Santa Monica and Malibu, and investigators suspect them of robbing and beating Shepard in his hilltop Malibu home sometime between Sunday night and Monday afternoon, said Santa Monica Police Sgt. Gary Gallinot.

Police identified the suspects as Tora Larveck, 19; John Giron, 18; Charles Hicks, 25; Larry Morris, 30, and Andrew Winder, 23. The suspects had Shepard’s auto and several “articles of value” taken from his home, Gallinot said.

The sergeant said that officers arrested the suspects after buying “stolen articles” from them on the beach. The men were booked for investigation of robbery, burglary, auto theft and conspiracy, Gallinot said.
